white Projects:
In Search of the Truth
Transmedia, Art

In Search of the Truth is an installation comprised of an inflatable, touring "Truth Booth" iconically shaped like a giant cartoon speech bubble with the word "TRUTH" boldly printed on the side. The interior acts much like a photo booth, but serves to compile video responses (up to 2 minutes) from the public. Once seated inside, participants will be invited to consider "What is Truth?" and then complete the statement "The truth is . . ." The recordings will be uploaded to a dedicated website.

The Truth Booth toured Ireland 2011-12, visiting well-known arts festivals, city locations, rural fairs, and the odd stop in between, capturing the diversity of viewpoints of the people in Ireland at a time of change and uncertainty. To expand and engage with audiences, the movements of the Truth Booth and sample responses were tracked via a website insearchofthetruth.net. Ultimately, the project will culminate in a large scale video mosaic and documentary.

The Truth Booth just finished a tour of Afghanistan: Check out THE TRUTH BOOTH BLOG for videos and images of the amazing tour.

Flicklist
Mobile

RAD contribution: UI, UX, identity.

Flicklist is a new app for the iPhone that makes finding films you’ll love easier than ever. Using bold clean text, hierarchy, and plenty of whitespace, a "magazine-style" design and functionality was adopted and helped to immediately separate Flicklist from the competition.

Also noteworthy is a novel drag & drop interface which allowed users to easily create movie lists and other core tasks without the confusion of a myriad extra pages.

Question Bridge
Transmedia, Interactive

RAD contribution: Art direction, UI, UX

Question Bridge is an innovative transmedia project that facilitates a dialogue between a critical mass of black men from diverse and contending backgrounds and creates a platform for them to represent and redefine black male identity in America.

RAD was involved to design the mobile app and interactive website to expand the engaging dialogue sparked by the art installation. Now, new participants can easily discover conversations, contribute questions and answers, follow and tag conversations while creating an online living archive for black male voices in America.

Slingshot Cowboy
Mobile Gaming

RAD Contribution: Concept creation, gameplay, UI, illustration, and animation.

Slingshot Cowboy is a simple, addictive, retro iPhone game noteworthy for being the first mobile game to employ the now ubiquitious Slingshot. The game organically topped the charts reaching the #1 spot in the All Games category and has been played over 75 million times with 9 million downloads and counting. Its success created the whole slingshot genre (of Angry Birds fame).

The Long March
Video Installation, sculpture

RAD contribution: Concept creation, art direction, animation, video editing, special effects.

The Long March is a 27 monitor installation commissioned by the recently rennovated Birmingham Shuttlesworth International Airport. The installation incorporates depictions of movement, migration and marching from different eras in Alabama history, for instance, the Civil War, the Trail of Tears, the Children's March, the Selma Marches, football marching bands, the railroad, and migrations to the "Magic City." The long row of monitors (the long march) track to the center of the wall and meld into a kaleidoscope. The kaleidoscope is tiled in the shape of a Camellia - the Alabama state flower. The Camellia, in this instance, is a repository of past and present motion that represents the flowering that grows out of movement. The kaleidoscopic mixes and melds the long march footage creating new emergent patterns, forms and colors. The travelers who will encounter the piece will be able to envision themselves as part of this mosaic that is symbolized through Alabama's relationship to 'the march' as a form of historical progression.

Along The Way
Video, Art

RAD contribution: concept creation, video editing, Vfx, filming.

Along The Way is a 30 ft x 10 ft video installation at the of Oakland International Airport, terminal 2, commissioned by the Oakland Port Authority.

Along the Way is a 20-minute video mosaic that includes over 1,500 video portraits featuring the people and places of Oakland, California and the surrounding Bay Area. Along the Way is about the journeys a diverse community like Oakland bestows upon its people. The diversity of Oakland and its vibrancy is captured in extraordinary video portraits of everyday people. At times intensity, seriousness, humor or even lightness is evoked through a stare, grin or grimace. Faces and places merge and commingle creating a vocabulary that evokes mood while underscoring place and movement with the unifying thread being the humanity of what we encounter “along the way” in a place like Oakland.

This film was made in collaboration with the Cause Collective, aka photographers Jessica Ingram, Bayete Ross-Smith, and Hank Willis thomas, and ethnographer Jorge Sanchez.

Wheel of Fortune
Sculpture

RAD contribution: concept creation, 3D modeling, creative direction

Wheel of Fortune is a three dimensional timeline depicting the expansion in production of synthetic rubber over the past 100 years. The form and content of the sculpture is based on the volume of synthetic rubber produced each year since its invention in 1909. The sculpture is made of tire rubber (60% synthetic rubber). Events such as WWII, the Oil Embargo of the 70’s, and the Asian Financial Crisis (1998) can clearly be seen as a bump or dip in the overall upward trajectory of rubber production. With tire treads as markers of time, the Wheel provides the viewer a rare chance to experience the passing of time (or history) in a physical and visual representation. The sculpture bears witness to the ways in which a specific industry has been affected by global events.

Wheel of Fortune was commissioned by LANXESS Corporation to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the invention of synthetic rubber. The sculpture was made in collaboration with artists Hank willis Thomas and Loren Madsen.

Hava
Branding/UI/PackagingPackaging

RAD contribution: create the identity, branding, packaging, and user interfaces (ipad, iphone, and pc) for Monsoon Multimedia's Hava product line.

The Hava line of products allow you to beam your cable TV to any mobile device anywhere in the world as long as you have a 3g or better internet connection. In order to do this, the mobile user interface must be able to control your home TV just like your TV remote. To say the least, to design this in a simple way on multiple mobile devices with different screen sizes was a huge challenge. Hava is the main competitor to Slingbox and they were getting trashed by Slingbox's beautiful million dollar agency branding and design. I came in at a monetary pittance and revitalized their product with a simple layout but strangely unique and memorable brand and iconography. Your TV can now follow you anywhere you are in the world.

I See it Now
Experimental film / art

RAD contribution: Concept creation, art direction, filming, VFX, Video editing.

On display at the Oakland International Airport (Terminal 2 Media Wall), I See it Now follows a long-established photographic tradition of capturing the Bay Area landscape through the medium of panoramic imagery. I See It Now uses video images arranged in a 360 degree montage of a Bay Area day, offering viewers a unique sense of how we move through the landscape of our lived experiences. The day unfolds, a journey is taken, and memory is created. Even as time is marked by sunrise and sunset, and land is bounded by water, time and space meld into one. As we traverse Bay Area schools, intersections, mountaintops and bridges, what could go unseen becomes vital: a stone in the morning sun at Pacifica’s Shelter Cove, a corner store in the Mission District, goats on the side of the railway tracks in the Bay View District, or a lone dancer moving along San Francisco’s waterfront. I see it now.

Big Pollution
Mobile Gaming

RAD contribution: concept creation, gameplay, design, UI, UX

Big Pollution was released shortly after the British Petroleum oil spill disaster in the Gulf in an attempt to raise awareness and help contribute to the clean-up effort. 10% of all profits donated to the National Wildlife Federation. Gameplay revolved around steering a cap into the deep, navigation around obstacle, and hopefully capping the seep. The game reached #11 on the appstore games chart.

The Truth Is I Am You
Art / Design

Made in collaboration with Hank Willis Thomas, The Truth is I Am You is a poem installed as a series of speech balloons that line a covered walkway linking the School of Nursing and the School of Dentistry at the University of California at San Francisco. The 300-foot installation highlights the diversity of cultures that exemplify the UCSF community.

Each balloon displays a single line from the poem translated into each of the languages spoken by the student body. Placards containing a phonetic spelling in English accompany them, so that any person can learn to say each line.

Starting with, “The truth is I am you” and ending with “The truth is I love you,” this piece attempts to use this corridor as brief passageway to other systems of considering who we are, what we value, where we come from, and where we are going. An inverted map of the world (with the North and South poles reversed) accompanies the poem. The languages include Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, Farsi, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swahili, Swedish, Tagalog, Thai, Turkish, Urdu, and others.

Branded
Art / Photo-manipulation

RAD Contribution: Photo-alteration and graphic design work for artist Hank Willis Thomas's "Branded" series.

"Thomas's images explore the tenuous relationship between history, the body, race, class and commercial markets, examining the ways in which each of these aspects comes to bear on the carefully and intentionally developed products, logos and corresponding ad campaigns. The images establish the direct and critical relationship between consumers’ ideas and desires and the historical and current realities outside this commercial environment.” – Isolde Brielmaier
